Free the Butterflies
Florida is the home of the largest butterfly observatory. Hundreds of butterflies are trapped in a tiny room with butterfly bushes. The butterfly observatory exploits some of the rarest breeds of butterflies. The double doors at the exit makes sure that no butterfly eve
r holds a chance of escaping. These butterflies never see the real outdoors. These butterflies are confined to live their whole entire lives in this 1,000 sq.ft room. The climate control simulates the actual temperatures of Key West. Yet is
not hard to tell how many butterflies are housed a year. In the gift shop, the observatory sells plastic cases with dead butterflies. When I questioned the sales clerk regarding the amount of dead butterflies, she assured me they died of natural causes. Photographs by :
